The port and fishing village of Greetsiel can proudly look back on a history spanning over 650 years. This picturesque port village was first mentioned in written records in 1388. Greetsiel Highlights

There are various sights of historical and cultural value in Greetsiel that are worth visiting. One of the main attractions are the twin mills, which are an impressive example of the regional mill building art. The green mill dates from 1856, while the red mill was built in 1706. The latter was renovated in 1921 from parts of the Aurich Wall Mill from 1750, which further underlines its historical significance. Other places of interest are the pumping station, the old sluice and the new sluice. These structures are important testimonies to coastal drainage technology and illustrate the long tradition of water regulation in this region. The Greetsiel harbor is an important hub for fishing and yachting. It consists of a fishing harbor on the west side and a yacht harbor on the east side of the harbor basin. Thanks to the completion of the Leyhörn headland, there is now a tide-independent fairway that allows ships to reach Greetsiel harbor even when the water level in the Outer Ems is low. Another notable building is the Steinhaus, a former seat of the Cirksena family. This brick building was built around 1600 on the foundations of an outbuilding dating from 1390. It is an impressive example of regional architectural history and provides an insight into life at that time. The Evangelical Reformed Church is another historical attraction in Greetsiel. It was built in two construction phases between 1380 and 1410 as a separate church for the head of the church, Haro Edzardsna. The rectangular brick church features Gothic pointed arch windows and was confirmed by Pope Boniface IX in 1401. It was originally intended to be dedicated to St. Mary and belong to the Diocese of Münster before it was completed. Overall, Greetsiel offers a variety of historical and cultural highlights that will delight visitors with their expertise and charm.
